Group Your Keywords. Group Your Keywords.
Posted on June 18th, 2008 by SOB -->How many times have you heard the pros tell you that you have to “tightly group” your keywords? Well, let me say it to you as a n00b. Group your keywords. Let me tell you why.
Last week, I was pruning one of my campaign. This was one of my first campaigns that I started, targeting an extremely competitive niche. So, when I started this campaign a couple of months back, obviously, I added 1000s upon 1000s of keywords. Kws totalling over 12000 (thats twelve thousand), and I thought I was tightly grouping them. WRONG!
Here is what I did. I downloaded all the stats to Adwords Editor for all time, and sorted them by KW names. I found that there were many kws that were duplicates. ie. the same kw was in more than one adgroup. Which was a problem, because I also noticed that in 1 adgroup, it was ranking at position #5 with a low CPC and in another group it was ranking much lower with a higher CPC.
I first removed all the dupe keywords that were ranking low with high CPC from various adgroups. Next, I removed all the kws that were taking up my time, ie. kws that haven’t gotten any impressions in the last month, or really low impressions and no clicks since the campaign was started. Then I removed kws that had impressions, had clicks, but were not really getting any conversions.
The 12000 kws are now just a little over 1800 kws in 25 adgroups. My avg CPC has gone down, my CTR has increased, and ofcourse, I am getting more targetted and quality traffic.
